scott lamps was born in 1980 and grew up in the city of neenah, wi. he studied piano from a young age before learning clarinet in 5th grade and saxophone in 6th. he was successful in school, earning good grades and gaining acceptance into the music program at uw-madison based on his proficiency at saxophone. after failing his theory entrance exam, scott was forced to teach himself beginning music theory from a book in order to pass the next semester. at the university he studied saxophone for a year before he began learning the upright bass, seeking more of a role in the foundation of music. he studied bass with legendary richard davis and graduated in 2003 with a music composition degree after studying with joel naumann, stephen dembski and les thimmig. in 2002 scott joined mike droho and jp roney to form the acoustic pop group the profits. their debut album the sign of the dollar (2004) was scott's first foray into record production. he also produced their critically lauded and popularly successful second record far from you and your everyday noise (2005). scott lended bass, guitar, piano, cello, vocals, drum programming, string and horn arrangements and a song to far from you and your everyday noise. in 2006 scott left the profits to pursue producing and composing. as a composer scott has scored several independent films, notably american renaissance, how to be a richard, running home, outside in, and hit.run.love. in 2005 he wrote a successful television theme for universal windows, and in 2007 he wrote the music for sword in the stone, a 90 minute stage musical co-written by andy park and produced by chicago's quest theatre ensemble. the play was lauded for its fantastical nature and ambitious production value, boasting a cast of 14, an orchestra of 3 and a free ticket price. his first solo album of songs, entitled music is art, was released in early 2007 and sold out on the eve of the release. it is currently available at cdbaby.com. he has also written various pieces for friends and family including a collection of lullabies for his niece and a piano sonata for the wedding of his sister. as a producer scott has worked with dozens of artists from around the us creating many different types of music. the profits' far from you and your everday noise is densely produced pop-rock while the folky fair and foul weather by sarah is stripped down and simple. the alleged euphoric state of self actualization by mike droho is edgy, driving and electronic while winnebago by gage is lush and organic with voices and strings. scott revels in making unique music and working with original and inspired artists. he is currently a staff producer at dna studios in madison, wi. as an instrumentalist scott is proficient on upright bass (his principle instrument), bass guitar, piano and guitar. he has travelled around the country as a bassist with the profits, mike droho and mike sullivan and as baritone guitarist with emily white. he was principal bassist in the uw symphony orchestra and currently plays with the bjso. |
